Desire for NRI grooms has dropped sharply in India

The once strong demand for Non-Resident Indian (NRI) grooms in India has dropped sharply due to stricter US immigration policies, particularly those targeting the H-1B visa used by many skilled Indian professionals. This shift is driven by a profound fear among Indian families: they worry that if their child marries an NRI, the groom's job or immigration status could be lost due to ongoing US visa uncertainty. What was historically seen as a secure path to settling in America has now become a considerable risk.

This change is so significant that it has transformed the marriage market, forcing matchmaking services to adapt by introducing a 'US visa filter,' as the groom's visa status has become the single most critical factor in deciding a match.
