Virar Building Collapse During Baby’s Birthday Party Claims 15 Lives, Including Mother and One-Year-Old Birthday Girl

A tragic incident struck Virar in Maharashtra’s Palghar district when an unauthorized four-storey residential building, Ramabai Apartment, collapsed shortly after midnight on 28 August 2025. The structure, which housed nearly 50 flats, came crashing down on an adjacent vacant tenement at Vijay Nagar around 12.05 am. At the time of the collapse, a one-year-old girl’s birthday party was underway on the fourth floor, leaving several residents and guests trapped under the debris.

Palghar District Collector Dr. Indu Rani Jakhar confirmed on 28 August 2025 that the death toll has risen to 15 after three more bodies were recovered overnight. Among the deceased was the little girl whose birthday was being celebrated during the tragedy. Six others sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment, officials from the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation said.

Rescue operations by the NDRF, police, and fire brigade personnel continued through the night and into morning. Emergency teams worked to clear the rubble, with authorities stressing that operations would continue until it was confirmed no one remained trapped. Investigations into the collapse and the unauthorized status of the building are also expected to follow.
