Bihar : Among the many light-hearted traditions at Indian weddings, Juta Churai, the bride’s sisters stealing the groom’s shoes, has taken centre stage. Once a playful ritual, it has evolved into a full-blown operation, thanks in part to Bollywood and the internet.
The custom, where the groom must ‘buy back’ his shoes with cash, has taken on new levels of creativity and competition. A recent viral video showcases a particularly cunning method: the bride’s sister ties the groom’s shoes to her own feet, concealing them under her dress, making it virtually impossible for anyone to retrieve them without crossing personal boundaries. The video, posted by Instagram user Manoj Chaudhary has amassed over 3.4 million views. Captioned “Bihar ka joota churai rasam“, the clip features a young woman emerging from the wedding mandap. A man can be heard remarking that, if the juta churai ritual is to be carried out properly, the shoes must be hidden so well that no one can find them; ensuring the brother-in-law has no option but to pay up.
The woman then cheerfully ties the groom’s shoes to her own feet and conceals them beneath her dress, making it highly unlikely that any guest would dare look there. As a result, the groom is left with little choice but to hand over the money. Social media users have responded with a mix of amusement and sarcasm. Comments ranged from “You’re mad, teaching girls to steal!" to playful jabs like “Do you own a shoe shop?"
